Thirty-one other rooms let Jay Higgins slide, and the Commanders were the ones holding the card at the 236th overall pick. Highway robbery. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The cost of the Slackman reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a building block for the line, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Alfred Collins in pick 59 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Jordan Burch, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jabbar Muhammad in pick No. 164 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Dont'e Thornton Jr. still on the board at the 202nd pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a linebacker like Jay Higgins reach No. 236 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They reached a country mile for Joey Slackman at the 244th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
