There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Commanders started one anyway for Gabe Jacas, 137 picks ahead of schedule.
The Simon pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. With quarterback and interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get an enforcer at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Colston Loveland was still sitting there in the 78th overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tez Johnson at No. 88 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Azareye'h Thomas at pick No. 109 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Evan Stewart here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A want over a need in pick 138: Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety while quarterback and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
They talked themselves into Gabe Jacas at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nicholas Singleton in the 198th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylen Reed a notch or two before his time. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
The board fumbled Cody Simon all the way to Round 7, Pick 25, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at slot 246 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
