The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 112 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 247 like a gift left on the doorstep.

They will need Thornton Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
