The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The Sainristil pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Caleb Williams in the 2nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Cooper DeJean was the payoff at pick 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick No. 48 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at slot 67 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is a better player than No. 78 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Blake Corum for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Mike Sainristil in Round 4, Pick 14 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nice patience on Johnny Wilson, who had no business lasting to the 139th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Garret Greenfield at No. 222 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
