The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Dominique Hampton, 82 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 4 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cooper Beebe in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 67th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ben Sinnott. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Renardo Green at pick No. 100 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dylan Laube well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 139 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Mason McCormick in pick 145, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dominique Hampton in pick No. 152 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Braiden McGregor in the 161st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Khristian Boyd went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 35. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
KT Leveston in the 210th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Kimani Vidal at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
