The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Trey Amos, the No. 50 name on the board, in slot 250. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
The Jack Gibbens deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in slot 35, with Shemar Stewart worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Josh Simmons at No. 38 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a cornerback like Jahdae Barron reach Round 2, Pick 29 and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Walter Nolen in pick 103 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Armand Membou at pick No. 142 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Jihaad Campbell in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tre Harris at the 181st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Quinshon Judkins in the 194th overall pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Xavier Restrepo at slot 207 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: T.J. Sanders still on the board at the 238th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trey Amos at Round 7, Pick 32 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
