The Tim Smith selection is the head-turner. The Commanders reached 103 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The Mullings value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 29 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, a steep price for the projection.
They took Demetrius Knight Jr. at par in Round 2, Pick 29, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A wild overpay on Savion Williams in slot 79, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Kalel Mullings in the 148th overall pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tim Smith well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Beaux Collins in pick No. 238, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; C.J. Baskerville in pick 250 says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
