Washington Commanders

The Commanders did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Commanders walked out of the weekend still thin at quarterback, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons. No fireworks, but a solid B.

The Wilson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The cost of the Puni reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · JC Latham · OT · rank 15
In pick No. 23 they get a blindside protector at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 26
A quiet steal in pick 36: Johnny Wilson for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 39
A straight-up fair deal on T.J. Tampa at Round 2, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 68
Chris Braswell at the 71st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 94
They paid up for Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 98
Dominick Puni at the 87th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 111
They jumped the gun on Junior Colson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 117
Khyree Jackson in No. 107 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 143
Luke Lachey in pick 144 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 181
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Burch went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Carson Steele · RB · rank 226
Carson Steele in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
