Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Dylan McMahon at Round 7, Pick 8 is 63 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Getting Sturdivant where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
They let Dallas Turner come to them and pounced at pick No. 36. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 39th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Leonard Taylor III went about where he belonged in No. 56. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in slot 71, where Cooper DeJean graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Dominick Puni at par in No. 100, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaheim Bell in Round 4, Pick 7 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Nehemiah Pritchett at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick 150 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
J. Michael Sturdivant at slot 185 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value with a capital V on Jordan Burch in pick No. 192, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Dylan McMahon at the 228th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
