If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Zion Logue at No. 220 is 66 spots clear of where he belonged. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. However the rest shakes out, Dixon at that price is a win they earned.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.13
· Pick 13
· Laiatu Latu
· DL-EDGE
· rank 10
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a premier pass rusher. More want than need.
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Graham Barton
· OT
· rank 25
In the 24th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.31
· Pick 31
· Tyler Guyton
· OT
· rank 28
In slot 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Jonathon Brooks
· RB
· rank 48
No drama and no debate, Jonathon Brooks went about where he belonged in the 44th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.24
· Pick 56
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 49
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 56 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.24
· Pick 87
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 75
Mike Sainristil in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.29
· Pick 92
· MarShawn Lloyd
· RB
· rank 97
MarShawn Lloyd in slot 92 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
R3.33
· Pick 96
· Audric Estime
· RB
· rank 103
Audric Estime at the 96th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Elijah Jones
· CB
· rank 115
The board had Elijah Jones higher than the Round 4 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.38
· Pick 174
· Layden Robinson
· OG
· rank 175
They paid sticker price for Layden Robinson in the 174th overall pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Isaiah Williams
· WR
· rank 180
They robbed the room for Isaiah Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.45
· Pick 220
· Zion Logue
· DL
· rank 286
Zion Logue in No. 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.13
· Pick 233
· Johnny Dixon
· CB
· rank 190
Circle this one: Johnny Dixon at Round 7, Pick 13 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.24
· Pick 244
· Donovan Jennings
· OT
· rank 238
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Jennings in pick No. 244. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.26
· Pick 246
· Myles Harden
· CB
· rank 209
Myles Harden in No. 246 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
