There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Tanner Mordecai a full 196 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nate Wiggins at No. 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. at the 37th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Luke Lachey in pick 68 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Gabriel Murphy in Round 3, Pick 37 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Blake Fisher at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Mike Sainristil in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner Mordecai in pick No. 182, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Jason Henderson at Round 7, Pick 5, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
