You could see the war room lean forward. Josaiah Stewart at slot 187 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Put together, it is a D.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Wyatt Milum at slot 44 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Nolen in pick 76, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Nick Emmanwori in the 79th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 125th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Jihaad Campbell at Round 5, Pick 9 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach pick No. 148 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Savion Williams still on the board at the Round 5 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled T.J. Sanders all the way to Round 5, Pick 31, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Dylan Fairchild at pick 170 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cam Skattebo in the 171st pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Josaiah Stewart in pick No. 187 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They robbed the room for Alfred Collins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Darien Porter at slot 209 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Rylie Mills at No. 247 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
