Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Tahj Brooks got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 250th pick. No fireworks, but a solid B.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Briningstool has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach Round 2, Pick 29 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jihaad Campbell in the 79th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in No. 148, and they pounced on premier running back value. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Ryan Fitzgerald in slot 207 is close to grand larceny; a specialist that good had no business lasting this long. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They paid up for Jake Briningstool at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at the 250th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
