Somebody in slot 150 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Andrew Mukuba, the No. 87 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that.
They robbed the room for Luther Burden III here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Maxwell Hairston went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in slot 150 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Kurtis Rourke was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Aeneas Peebles at pick 172 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jordan James in pick No. 174 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had Jay Higgins higher than the 190th overall pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Connor Colby at the 211th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like CJ West reach pick No. 249 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
