Washington Commanders

The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-.

Nobody had Joe Milton III this high, and it is not close. The Commanders reached 48 spots to get him at the 152nd pick. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Benson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Eichenberg pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman still on the board.

A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 8
In No. 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 28
In pick No. 23 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
J.J. McCarthy at the 36th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 39
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in pick 40, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
You do not let a linebacker like Edgerrin Cooper reach the 67th pick and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Good price on Cade Stover in Round 3, Pick 14, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
Brenden Rice in pick 100 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
Trey Benson in pick No. 108 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 29 on Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker they were not short of.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 128
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chau Smith-Wade at the 139th pick is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
They talked themselves into Joe Milton III at the 152nd overall pick, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 244
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Josh Proctor. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
