There is reaching, and then there is CJ West at pick 170. The Cowboys jumped the board by 47 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The Bassa pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a load in the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Kaleb Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Xavier Restrepo at slot 76 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Emery Jones Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
CJ West in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach the 172nd pick and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Jabbar Muhammad at slot 174 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Raheim Sanders in No. 190 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Hayden Conner at par in the 211th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cam Horsley at the 249th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
