The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
They will need Jones to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Legette at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.6
· Pick 6
· Drake Maye
· QB
· rank 5
In pick 6 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Ladd McConkey
· WR
· rank 34
Ladd McConkey in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 37
Fair-plus on Jordan Morgan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.15
· Pick 47
· Darius Robinson
· DL-EDGE
· rank 39
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Darius Robinson in the 47th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 38
You do not let a wide receiver like Xavier Legette reach slot 67 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 57
They let Payton Wilson come to them and pounced at No. 68. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.6
· Pick 70
· Kiran Amegadjie
· OT
· rank 66
Kiran Amegadjie at pick No. 70 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 75
Mike Sainristil at the 78th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Roger Rosengarten
· OT
· rank 135
Roger Rosengarten in the 100th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Dallin Holker
· TE
· rank 150
Dallin Holker at pick 139 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Kitan Oladapo
· S
· rank 154
Kitan Oladapo in No. 152 is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Matthew Jones
· OG
· rank 271
Value said wait; Matthew Jones in slot 222 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.11
· Pick 231
· Frank Gore Jr.
· RB
· rank 226
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
