You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Frank Crum in No. 257. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
McCormick falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
Edgerrin Cooper at the 50th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They took Braden Fiske at par in pick 58, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Max Melton is a better player than Round 3, Pick 25 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Gabriel Murphy in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Spencer Rattler, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Jarrian Jones at No. 126 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Mason McCormick at the 164th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Mustapha at slot 169, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Value said wait; Delmar Glaze in pick No. 172 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Jaylan Ford in No. 202 is fair value, right on his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Garret Greenfield at pick 219 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Magee went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 45. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
By-the-book stuff, Trevin Wallace at the 232nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kimani Vidal a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
They paid a round early for Trey Taylor in Round 7, Pick 36, more than the board wanted. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Frank Crum at slot 257 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
