The Cowboys spent real capital to be 57 picks early on Will Howard, and the board is going to hold them to it.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. Landing Rourke that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get a seam-stretching tight end at fair value.
Value said wait; Will Howard in slot 44 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Andrew Mukuba in No. 76; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid up for Cody Simon at pick No. 118 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Barryn Sorrell at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kurtis Rourke slipping to the 151st overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Vernon Broughton at Round 5, Pick 33 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
They did well to land DJ Giddens in pick 174, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in the 204th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Hancock in the 211th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They talked themselves into Tonka Hemingway at No. 232, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Theo Wease Jr. at pick No. 239 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Hayden Conner at slot 247 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
