Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent pick No. 169 on Alfred Collins, a name most had 52 spots down the list. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Cowboys indulged a want in Stewart while a need in linebacker and tight end stayed open. Landing Dart that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
Deone Walker at slot 32 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Landon Jackson at pick No. 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Josaiah Stewart at edge rusher with linebacker and tight end open.
They let Dylan Sampson come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Kaleb Johnson in Round 3, Pick 13 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Ozzy Trapilo a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Logan Brown at slot 151 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Ricky White III in the 155th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Alfred Collins in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Jaxson Dart at the 170th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Hunter Wohler at pick 172 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Davison Igbinosun at Round 6, Pick 13 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Jamaree Caldwell in pick No. 218 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jimmy Horn Jr. in No. 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
