You could see the war room lean forward. Sione Vaki at pick No. 231 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
If Gray pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 24th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Adonai Mitchell at pick 56 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cedric Gray at No. 84 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Blake Corum at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
McKinnley Jackson in pick No. 115 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 4, Pick 17 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in slot 173, where Jordan Travis graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Ty'Ron Hopper in the 213th overall pick, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Sione Vaki here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
