The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jordan Whittington at No. 245 regardless, 26 picks early.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Simpson. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get an enforcer at safety. Need was not the driver here.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 56 with a little surplus value in Jackson Powers-Johnson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Roman Wilson in pick No. 87, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in the 124th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at Round 5, Pick 38 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for David Ugwoegbu, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
