You could see the war room lean forward. Caelen Carson at pick No. 87 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Limmer pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Good price on Patrick Paul in the 56th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Caelen Carson in the 87th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Beaux Limmer in Round 4, Pick 24 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Jacob Cowing went about where he belonged in pick No. 174. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at No. 212 squarely in line with his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Nathaniel Watson slid further than he should have, and slot 245 is lovely value for the linebacker. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
