The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Barrett pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 19 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid a round early for Chris Braswell in the 34th pick, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 56th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Trey Benson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Thomas in Round 5, Pick 19 is fair value, right on his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Dillon Johnson at pick No. 174 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Michael Barrett at No. 216 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tayvion Robinson in Round 7, Pick 24 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
