You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Jordan Magee in pick No. 174.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 56 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Audric Estime enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kris Abrams-Draine at pick 124 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Magee. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for J.J. Weaver in No. 212, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
