The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Cobee Bryant, the No. 140 name on the board, sitting there at the 189th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The cost of the Sanders reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through offensive lineman. The Powell-Ryland pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with offensive lineman, linebacker and other spots still on the board.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Omarion Hampton in pick No. 45 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Deone Walker slipping to slot 50 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jabbar Muhammad in the 76th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Domani Jackson at No. 112 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 117th pick on Antwaun Powell-Ryland with offensive lineman, linebacker and other spots unsolved.
Jonah Coleman at pick 155 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Tez Johnson higher than Round 5, Pick 31, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Jack Bech still on the board at the 170th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Tyler Baron in the 171st pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Steal is underselling it; Cobee Bryant at No. 189 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, T.J. Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
You do not let a safety like Hunter Wohler reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in slot 247, where Akili Arnold graded well above the range. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Nice patience on Will Sheppard, who had no business lasting to Round 7, Pick 40. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
