The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Matthew Jones went at the 233rd pick, a good 32 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. On value alone, Robinson makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Guyton in the 41st overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Darius Robinson come to them and pounced at pick No. 56. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Max Melton for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Maason Smith in No. 88 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good price on Malik Mustapha in the 174th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They read the board right and Ryan Flournoy was the payoff at pick 216. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Matthew Jones at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Edefuan Ulofoshio in No. 244, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
