Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Drew Allar, the No. 107 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 5, Pick 34. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.
They will need Helm to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Tyleik Williams in pick No. 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Deone Walker at slot 44 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on TreVeyon Henderson at Round 2, Pick 18 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Donovan Jackson in pick No. 77 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaiah Bond at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Gunnar Helm this early at slot 113. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Jonah Coleman in No. 119 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Hunter Wohler in pick 151 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Davison Igbinosun, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Jaxson Dart here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Alfred Collins at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a quarterback like Drew Allar reach the 172nd pick and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Logan Brown at Round 6, Pick 5, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Joey Slackman in slot 188, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Terrance Ferguson in No. 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
