There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Jarquez Hunter a full 147 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Dart at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Raekwon Davis leading the way.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 22 they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Isaiah Bond in the 33rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Kaleb Johnson went about where he belonged in the 50th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Derrick Harmon in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in pick 77, with Fernando Carmona worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Evan Stewart enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 18. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Rylie Mills at the 87th pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Logan Brown at No. 113 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Omarr Norman-Lott in Round 5, Pick 13; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Alfred Collins at pick 155 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Joey Slackman at pick No. 169 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaxson Dart at the 170th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Gunnar Helm in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jarquez Hunter well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Hunter Wohler higher than pick 199, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on Tony Grimes in Round 6, Pick 34, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
