You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Stackhouse reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Fairchild steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get an every-down engine for the run game, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Tre Harris in the 58th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Nazir Stackhouse a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Jamon Dumas-Johnson was the payoff at the 122nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Dylan Fairchild was still sitting there in slot 154, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Brady Cook at Round 6, Pick 26 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
