The real work happened on the phones. The Cowboys fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Powers-Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. That Jones pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in the 56th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Josh Newton in pick No. 89, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Malik Washington at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Christian Jones at Round 6, Pick 37 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
