Call it larceny. A.J. Haulcy sat on the board until the Round 3 slot, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a featured back, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 31 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board fumbled Keith Abney II all the way to the 63rd overall pick, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: A.J. Haulcy still on the board at Round 3, Pick 28. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Sam Hecht in pick No. 112, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Oscar Delp at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Reggie Virgil in the 177th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Aamil Wagner in pick 180, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Wright at Round 7, Pick 2, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
