The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Roman Wilson, the No. 83 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 124 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped offensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. If Hopper pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Audric Estime at pick 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Roman Wilson in Round 4, Pick 24 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Ty'Ron Hopper at the 131st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Braelon Allen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and JD Bertrand was the payoff at pick No. 212. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
David Ugwoegbu slipping to No. 245 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
