Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Johnny Dixon, the No. 190 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 230th overall pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Lee pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Trey Benson at pick No. 56, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Maason Smith at pick No. 87 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for Steele Chambers, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Johnny Dixon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at No. 232 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Matt Lee at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Eyabi Okie-Anoma at pick 244 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
