Nobody else had Jalin Conyers anywhere near the 247th overall pick. The Cowboys did, by 91 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Carter. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Tetairoa McMillan at Round 1, Pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Omarion Hampton in pick 44, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Deone Walker in slot 76 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Barrett Carter in the 148th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Joshua Gray went about where he belonged in the 168th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Billy Bowman Jr. at No. 170 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; Quinn Carroll in No. 171 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for DJ Uiagalelei, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Nash in slot 209, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
