You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Payton Wilson at the 30th pick, roughly 47 spots before his name belonged. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Hit on Payton Wilson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a green-dot type in the middle, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Zak Zinter in No. 62 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Audric Estime in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Joe Milton III at slot 130, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tatum Bethune at pick 174 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jason Henderson at the 212th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for Trey Wedig at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
