Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jordan James got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at slot 73. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Helm pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. A real need, handled.
Value with a capital V on Tate Ratledge in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Jordan James here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Chris Paul Jr. at No. 149 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jack Bech at pick No. 169 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaeden Roberts at Round 5, Pick 32 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Gunnar Helm at slot 171 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Jalon Daniels at pick 186, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 209 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
