The Cowboys bet big and early on Carson Steele, 71 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
However the rest shakes out, Nix at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They barely believed it either: Bo Nix still on the board at pick No. 56. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ben Sinnott this early at the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Dwight McGlothern in the 173rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fair-plus on Nathaniel Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Joshua Cephus at No. 231 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Carson Steele at pick 242 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
