There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Jowon Briggs a full 54 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
On value alone, Devonshire makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Corum in pick No. 87 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Caedan Wallace in the 181st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jowon Briggs. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jordan Whittington in slot 225 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow M.J. Devonshire was still sitting there in slot 233, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Solomon Byrd a notch or two before his time. A minor need, but a need all the same.
