The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Bo Nix is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Bethune has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Jean-Baptiste at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 27 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Chris Braswell in the 50th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A premium they did not need to pay, T'Vondre Sweat a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylen Wright at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on DJ James. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 24 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of No. 133. Tight end needed the pick; an edge rusher in Brennan Jackson did not.
By-the-book stuff, James Williams at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 216 is the proof. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A tidy little value on Trey Taylor in the 233rd pick, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Tatum Bethune at the 244th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
