Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent Round 5, Pick 35 on Barryn Sorrell, a name most had 138 spots down the list. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Matthew Golden in Round 1, Pick 12 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in pick 44. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Dylan Sampson come to them and pounced at pick No. 76. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Hollin Pierce was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mello Dotson in the 170th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, JJ Pegues at slot 172 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Barryn Sorrell this early at pick 174. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Ajani Cornelius at slot 190 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Clay Webb at pick No. 211 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thor Griffith well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
