When a board-topper like Troy Fautanu slides to the 87th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not.
They are betting Lewis proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get an island corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at No. 56. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Troy Fautanu in pick 87 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Ray Davis was the payoff at the 124th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Jaylan Ford in slot 174, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Chris Morris well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Aaron Lewis. A minor itch, scratched.
