The war room fell hard for Will Howard, and it showed at pick No. 81: 46 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Starks pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Fannin Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a three-down runner, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get protection for the quarterback, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 22nd overall pick they get a ballhawk on the back end, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
In slot 25 they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A conviction pick on Tyleik Williams at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver to take Malaki Starks, a safety that was not the priority.
Denzel Burke in the 55th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Harold Fannin Jr. was still sitting there in pick 75, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It fills a real need, too.
TreVeyon Henderson at slot 76 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Demetrius Knight Jr. in pick No. 78. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Will Howard in the 81st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cody Simon in Round 3, Pick 35 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
