Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Ainias Smith got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at Round 6, Pick 11. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

They are betting Tupuola-Fetui proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 31
In slot 28 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at pick 56, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
Trey Benson at pick No. 87 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 110
Leonard Taylor III at the 90th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
They paid up for Tommy Eichenberg at the 128th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 97
They will replay Brenden Rice at No. 134 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Zion Tupuola-Fetui · DE-EDGE · rank 214
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at Round 5, Pick 38 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 141
They barely believed it either: Ainias Smith still on the board at the Round 6 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Ro Torrence · CB · rank 179
Somehow Ro Torrence was still sitting there in the 216th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Rasheen Ali · RB · rank 206
Taking Rasheen Ali in Round 7, Pick 13 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 212
Nathaniel Watson at pick 244 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
