Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C+.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Myles Cole at the 212th overall pick, roughly 35 spots before his name belonged.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

Hit on Payton Wilson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.23 · Pick 55 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 70
They went early on Payton Wilson in No. 55, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 75
They talked themselves into Johnny Wilson at the 56th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Cooper Beebe at the 82nd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 84
They took Braden Fiske at par in slot 86, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Michael Hall Jr. · DT · rank 89
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. It fills a real need, too.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 131
A reach on Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 23; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 121
Fair-plus on Jarrian Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 189
They paid a round early for JD Bertrand in Round 5, Pick 38, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 209
A conviction pick on Jase McClellan at pick No. 193 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 247
They reached a country mile for Myles Cole at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Demorie Tate · CB · rank 254
They paid up for Demorie Tate at the 245th pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
