The Trevin Wallace pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 59 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The veteran additions, Chuck Clark chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 10 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 24th pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Corley at pick No. 56, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaylen Wright at Round 3, Pick 8 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
McKinnley Jackson at No. 106 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trevin Wallace in pick 174, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Rasheen Ali in the 216th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for Bub Means at No. 233 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Jalen Coker in slot 244, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
