When the story of this class is written, it opens with J.J. Weaver at the Round 7 slot, a reach of 84 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Ali. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a building block for the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 24; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Benson at the 87th pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Drake Nugent at No. 174, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Evan Anderson this early at pick No. 216. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
