There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Eyabi Okie-Anoma a full 50 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Getting Pearl where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick 56 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Blake Corum at slot 87 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach on Mekhi Wingo in Round 3, Pick 27; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tahj Washington in No. 174 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Ty'Ron Hopper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on JD Bertrand in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Eyabi Okie-Anoma at the 233rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Taking Julian Pearl in No. 244 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
