Nobody else had Sam Hartman anywhere near pick 183. The Cowboys did, by 100 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Tyjae Spears pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get juice off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
In the 24th pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Amarius Mims for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Payton Wilson went about where he belonged in pick No. 38. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kingsley Suamataia. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Brenden Rice at the 87th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Braelon Allen in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Luke McCaffrey is a better player than slot 173 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sam Hartman at the 183rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tip Reiman at No. 184 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
