The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Taulia Tagovailoa at pick 216 regardless, 71 picks early. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with cornerback, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 23rd overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 24 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good price on Junior Colson in Round 2, Pick 24, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Benson in slot 57, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Christian Mahogany at the 87th pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Justin Eboigbe adds an edge rusher while cornerback, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 174 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taulia Tagovailoa at Round 6, Pick 41 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Whittington at pick No. 244 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
